A.V. Baranov is a well-known expert in the field of experimental optical spectroscopy of complex molecules, metallic, semiconductor, and carbon nanoparticles, as well as hybrid structures based on them.

Most well-known areas of scientific research:

- Investigation of the physical mechanisms of Surface Enhanced Resonant Raman and Hyper-Raman Scattering near the surface of plasmonic metallic nanoparticles.

- detection of the effect of double coupled resonance in the Raman scattering of disordered nanocarbon materials widely used at present for the characterization of nanocarbons;

- development of the physical foundations of resonant two-photon spectroscopy (luminescence and nonelastic scattering of light) by complex molecules and semiconductor quantum dots;

- pioneer work on the physics of electronic and vibrational excitations in quantum dots of various types using resonant two-photon spectroscopy, as well as Raman spectroscopy;

- Priority research in the field of coherent control of the dynamics of exciton excitations in quantum nanocrystals;

- self-organization of semiconductor nanocrystals in ordered two- and three-dimensional structures on substrates of various types;

- transfer and dissipation of photoexcitation energy in systems of semiconductor quantum dots, rods and nanoplatelets, including hybrid structures based on semiconductor and carbon nanocrystals, as well as functional organic molecules.

- optical properties of anisotropic optically active chiral nanostructures and their complexes with organic molecules.

Author and Co-author more than 220 articles in journals indexed by WoS and Scopus, 5 collective monographs and 9 patents for invention. H-index (WoS 2016): 23.
